How digital tools can strengthen social impact
What can digital technologies mean for social enterprises and organizations working with people with disabilities? That’s the central question in the European project DIGIT-ABLE, in which De Omslag is an active partner. The project team recently published its first report – full of insights, opportunities, and practical recommendations.
What’s in the report?
The report explores how social enterprises – such as work integration companies and support organizations – can take meaningful steps in digital transformation. Not just digitizing to keep up, but in a way that aligns with their social mission: inclusive, thoughtful, and focused on real value for people.
The findings are based on desk research, conversations with professionals in four countries, and input from focus groups, interviews, and surveys. The research was carried out by Lichtwerk and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), in close collaboration with other project partners, including De Omslag.
What stood out?
There are major differences between countries, but some challenges are strikingly similar: • Digital infrastructure often falls short • Staff lack essential digital skills • Funding for innovation is limited • Cross-sector collaboration is still fragmented
Another key insight: topics like digital autonomy, data use, and ethics receive little attention – even though they hold great potential for making technology truly serve people.
Practical tools
The report doesn’t stop at analysis. It lays the foundation for a training programme tailored to social enterprises, consisting of: • One core module on digital transformation • Five additional modules, including AI, basic digital skills, data analytics, digital accessibility, and digital work instructions
The report also proposes creating Digital Innovation and Acceleration Hubs (DIAH-SEs) in each country – regional spaces where social enterprises can access expertise, training, support, and partnerships.
Why does this matter?
At De Omslag, we believe in technology that promotes inclusion, agency, and equal opportunities. Not a top-down tech push, but bottom-up digital development led by people and organizations with a social heart. DIGIT-ABLE fits perfectly with that vision.
That’s why we stay actively involved – supporting professionals, building networks, and sharing knowledge.
